Chapter Six

At eleven o’clock, the next day the gang met at Abby's house in the living room. Sherlock had already snuggled into position beside Abby on the overstuffed couch, resting his chin on Abby's lap. Andy, Froggy and Linda were seated on the floor in front of the coffee table, snacking on cola and chips. Linda pulled out a small pad of paper and began reading the notes she took while interviewing her mother about the Bainbridge Quilters.

"So which of the Quilting ladies should we talk to first?" Froggy asked.

Abby leaned back in her seat, raised her arms above her head and stretched. "I think we should begin with Betty. So far, she seems to have the best motive for having Mrs. Yarnell kicked out of the club. She has been the second place winner the past four years. I've heard she is determined to become the first place Quilting Queen."

Abby paused for a moment. "Come to think about it; it won't matter who we start with."

Linda asked, "Why not?"

"Because as soon as we leave the person we've talked to, she will be calling the rest of the group. My dad says those women have a better alert system then the F.B.I."

"Jeez, I didn’t think of that," Linda admitted. "But what if they don’t want to talk to us because we're so," she paused, "young."

Abby sighed and nodded her head. "You can't be serious. When it comes to quilting those women will talk your ear off."

"That's true," Linda said as she got up off the floor and plopped into the overstuffed chair.

Abby, Andy, Linda, and Froggy had agreed to visit neighbors' homes and collect information about the letters. Andy and Froggy would cover the south side of the valley, and Linda and Abby the north side.

After the meeting, the gang began their investigation. Even though the snowplows had been through a few hours earlier the snow was four-inches deep on the gravel roads. Dirty snow mounds were taller than the girls as they made their way to Mr. Gray's house.

Abby looked at her friend, who was wearing knitted black slacks and boots with three-inch heels. She looked like a Barbie doll, not a hair out of place. Abby was wearing jeans, hiking boots, and a thick heavy jacket with a furry hood that gave her the appearance of a fat Eskimo.

They turned left onto Froggy's road. The ranch style homes were set back on wooded lots. They walked into Mr. Gray's driveway; his house looked exactly like the houses on either side of it.

Abby could see Mr. Gray's pickup in the driveway, and she heard voices from the television so she knew he must be home. It only took three knocks before Mrs. Gray answered the door and invited them in.

Mrs. Gray was small and slightly stooped, with a crown of silver hair. She was wearing a pink quilted robe, dark pink ankle socks that made her skin look very pale and fuzzy pink slippers on her feet.

"My goodness," she said, when she saw Abby and Linda standing there.
